Mother's Day
I love Mother's Day...it's spring, it's the month of my birthday, it's the month of my husband's birthday, it's a celebration all the way around. And, since I'm a mother too, I get lots of people to celebrate with. My first Mother's Day was memorable for several reasons.
First, and obviously, it was memorable because I was a new mom and had a baby girl who was 3 months old. We went to church where each mom had to stand in recognition and receive a single carnation. That made me feel so special to be included in that annual ritual for the first time. I like how our pastor spoke on motherhood, the music was uplifting and the whole morning was wonderful. To continue our beautiful day, my husband and I decided to go on a picnic, just the three of us. We packed our lunch and set out for a community where there is a large lake. We envisioned sitting on a blanket having our lunch under the shade of a tree with a view of the lake. Well, our plans were sorely interrupted. We parked the car and started heading toward our destination. We had taken a few steps with the baby car seat in tow, when a security officer of the community stopped us. He wanted to see our identification and our proof that we actually lived in the neighborhood. Apparently, the "lake" isn't public. It is part of an association that wants to keep riff raff off their property. My husband, at the time, was a federal agent, and might have been able to muscle his way around the security officer using his badge, but he didn't use it for situations like that which didn't warrant it. So, we meekly left the premises in search of another perfect location.
Our plans were dashed and we were disappointed but I wasn't going to let it ruin my first Mother's Day. After all, it was me, my husband and my precious, darling baby... life was sweet. That was 17 years ago and we can laugh about it now; fortunately I've had many more wonderful days to celebrate motherhood that make up for the disappointment of that day.
Here are two photos taken on that day, my first Mother's Day. My husband brought me my gift with our baby in his arms, notice she is holding onto the gift bag...isn't that sweet? One card is from him and the other card is from her. The gift was a gold locket on a chain to wear as a necklace. I put her picture inside of it. When she started getting teeth, she used to grab it and bite it. I have the teeth marks to prove it.

That's sweet. I really don't remember my first mother's day, but I enjoy them just the same.
